What Is Heritage Rendering?

Heritage rendering is the application of lime-based render systems to traditional buildings, typically any property built before 1919, listed buildings of any grade, and properties in conservation areas. It is not simply a decorative finish. It is a technical intervention that determines how a building manages moisture for generations.

Old buildings (stone, brick, cob, rubble) are designed to breathe. Moisture enters through the fabric and evaporates back out. That cycle is how they stay dry and structurally sound. When a modern, cement-based render is applied, that moisture is trapped. It cannot escape. Over time, it causes spalling stonework, internal damp, rising salt deposits, and structural deterioration. In a listed building, this can also trigger planning enforcement action.

The correct approach is a breathable render system: natural hydraulic lime (NHL), lime putty, or a specified insulating lime system, mixed with compatible aggregates and applied in multiple coats with the curing time each coat requires. That is what Riley's provides.

Our Process

Site Assessment

We visit the property and assess the substrate: its age, construction material, current moisture levels, existing render condition, and any historical or listed building constraints. This is not optional. You cannot specify the right render system without understanding the building.

Specification

Based on the assessment, we specify the correct render system: the lime type (NHL 2, NHL 3.5, lime putty), the aggregate (local sand types vary across Devon and Cornwall), and the coat structure. For listed buildings, we liaise with conservation officers as required.

Preparation

All failed, inappropriate, or non-breathable render is removed. The substrate is prepared and dampened to the correct moisture level before each coat. This is where most render failures begin. Inadequate preparation accounts for most failures..

Multi-Coat Application

Lime render is applied in multiple coats: scratch coat, float coat, and finish coat. Each coat is allowed to cure fully before the next is applied. There are no shortcuts on curing time. The chemistry of lime demands it.

Finish & Protection

The final coat is finished to the specified texture. Where required, lime wash or breathable silicate paint is applied. The render is protected during curing from frost, direct sun, and drying winds.
