The project required machine application of hardwall plaster to all masonry walls throughout the property, creating a consistent and structurally sound base before the full skim finish. Machine application ensured uniform coverage and a level base that hand application struggles to match across an entire property. The result was a flawless skim finish throughout.

How we work

Our process

    Assessment & Preparation

    We assess the existing surface condition, any failed render or paint, and access requirements. Scaffolding or access platform requirements are confirmed. Surfaces are cleaned, repaired, and primed as required for the specified render system.

  2. 02

    Masking & Protection

    All windows, doors, sills, and surrounding surfaces are fully protected before spray application begins. Machine rendering is precise in skilled hands, but thorough protection is non-negotiable.

  3. 03

    Machine Application

    Render is applied by machine at the correct rate and thickness for the specified system. Coverage and consistency are checked throughout. Corners, arises, and reveals are formed and finished.

  4. 04

    Ruling Off & Finishing

    The render is ruled off to a consistent plane. On textured finishes, the surface is brought to the specified texture (scratch, float, sponge, or or scraped). On monocouche systems, the surface is scraped back while green to expose the aggregate and achieve the characteristic through-colour finish.

  5. 05

    Inspection & Sign-Off

    The completed render is inspected for consistency, coverage, and finish quality before protection is removed and the site is handed back.

Is machine spray rendering as good as hand rendering?

For most modern render systems (sand and cement, silicone, acrylic, monocouche) machine application produces a more consistent result than hand application across large areas because the pump delivers a uniform material flow at consistent pressure. The key variable is the skill of the operator in controlling thickness, coverage, and finish. Riley's has extensive machine rendering experience and the results speak for themselves in the portfolio.

What is the difference between machine rendering and traditional rendering?

Machine rendering refers to the application method, using a pump and spray head to apply the material, rather than applying it by hand with a hawk and trowel. The render materials can be the same. For large surfaces, machine application is faster and produces more consistent thickness and coverage. Traditional hand application is preferred for heritage lime render, detailed work, and smaller areas where machine setup is not economical.

How long does machine spray rendering take?

Programme depends on the area, the render system, access, and preparation requirements. A typical house re-render using silicone or monocouche by machine can often be completed in 3 to 5 days once scaffolding is in place, compared to 7 to 10 days for hand application. Multi-coat systems require curing time between coats. We provide a programme estimate with every written quotation.

Can machine rendering be used on any property?

Machine rendering is suitable for most modern construction: cavity wall, insulated frame, block, and brick. It is not appropriate for listed buildings, heritage buildings, or any solid-wall property that requires a breathable lime render system. We will advise on the correct approach at the assessment stage.
